Strategic Engagements Accelerate Water Access in Nairobi Region

The Athi Water Works Development Agency (AWWDA) has initiated strategic engagements with various Water Service Providers to enhance water supply management for residents in Nairobi and surrounding areas, including Kitengela, Mavoko, Ongata Rongai, and Utawala.

The collaborative efforts come in the wake of licensing from the Water Services Regulatory Board (WASREB), which paves the way for efficient distribution of water from the Northern Collector Tunnel and the Karimenu II Dam Bulk Water Systems. These systems are crucial for meeting the growing water demands in the region.

AWWDA is partnering with the Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company (NCWSC) to deliver an impressive 103 million liters of water daily to Nairobi. Additionally, the Mavoko Water and Sewerage Company will receive 5 million liters per day, aimed at enhancing water access in the region, including the Athi River Export Processing Zone, which is projected to receive 7 million liters daily.

The Oloilaiser Water and Sewerage Company will also benefit, receiving an extra 5 million liters per day to serve areas like Ongata Rongai, Kiserian, Ngong, and Matasia/Solange.

These strategic discussions focus on addressing the unique challenges faced by underserved communities, ensuring efficient and equitable water distribution. AWWDA aims to identify and eliminate bottlenecks that hinder access to clean water, facilitating improved services for residents.

In addition to the aforementioned enhancements, Nairobi is set to gain an additional 23 million liters daily from the Karimenu II Dam Bulk Water System. This supply is expected to significantly bolster water availability in the city through the Kiambu Reservoir in Thindigua.

AWWDA’s proactive approach signifies a commitment to improving water access across the region, with a clear focus on fostering collaboration among service providers to meet the diverse needs of the population.
