TENP Joins First Lady in Launching I Million Trees Initiative
Trainees and Staff of the Eldoret National Polytechnic joined The First Lady of the Republic of Kenya Rachel Ruto, who presided over the launch of the #GrowAMilli Eldoret-Iten Waterfund, at Kaptagat Forest, Elgeyo Marakwet County.
Recently the Ministry of Education rolled out the ‘TVET Greening Program’.
The Eldoret National Polytechnic Chief Principal Charles Koech applauded the first lady for the Initiative saying it will help in increasing the forest cover and mitigating climate change.
“We thank the first lady Mama Rachel Ruto for this initiative this will help achieve the required forest cover,” said the principal.
“I call upon Kenyans to take advantage of this rainy season and plant trees since they are beneficial for the soil as it fixes Nitrogen and helps to increase forest cover,” said the Eldoret National Polytechnic Principal.
The First Lady launched a partnership between The Nature Conservancy and her office to collaborate in the planting of 1 million trees along the watershed area in Kaptagat.
The exercise, organized by the Eldoret-Iten Water Fund, saw 13,000 trees planted and a “Mama Fruit Garden” established in the nearby Kiebor Primary School. So far, 400,000 trees have been planted in the Uasin Gishu and Elgeyo Marakwet watersheds and the remaining 600,000 seedlings will be planted gradually during the rainy season.
This initiative supports First Lady Mama Rachel Ruto’s goal of planting 500 million trees by 2032. This will contribute to President William Ruto’s call to plant 15 billion trees by 2032 and increase Kenya’s tree cover to over 30 percent.
