In a bid to inspire and mentor current students, Tenwek High School alumni, particularly those who have excelled in the medical field, gathered for a special event aimed at motivating the next generation of doctors.

The event held at the school premises in Bomet County, was spearheaded by notable alumni including Dr. Florentius Koech, a prominent neurosurgeon and CEO of Top Hill Hospital, and Engineer Dennis Chepkwony, chairman of the Old Boys association.

Dr. Koech while giving his speech emphasized the importance of passion and dedication in pursuing a career in medicine, stressing that success in the field requires personal commitment rather than external pressures.

“It’s not about your parents, it has to be you. It’s not about the title or money; it’s about serving humanity,” he encouraged the assembled students during his address.

Dr Koech later held a free medical camp for locals and students.

Engineer Dennis Chepkwony echoed these sentiments, expressing pride in the achievements of the school’s alumni and their commitment to giving back.

“Our job is to inspire and give hope to students, showing them that with dedication, they can surpass even our own accomplishments,” he remarked.

The event also featured Wilson Sosion, former Secretary General of the Kenya National Union of Teachers an alumni of the school who praised Tenwek High School for consistently producing top-tier graduates across various disciplines.

“Last year, 94 percent of our graduates were admitted to universities, with 64 students joining medical-related courses,” Sosion highlighted, underscoring the school’s reputation for academic excellence.

Mr. Simeon Mutali Chesembe, senior principal of Tenwek High School, expressed gratitude for the alumni’s efforts in sensitizing students about the medical profession.

“Today’s assembly, led by our esteemed alumni, has enlightened over 3000 students on what it takes to become a doctor,” Chesembe noted, optimistic about the impact on student motivation and future career choices.

The alumni’s initiative aims to establish a continuous engagement platform where successful graduates return to mentor and support current students.

This approach, according to Sosion, leverages the “monkey see, monkey do” principle in education, where students are inspired by witnessing alumni who have walked the same corridors achieve greatness.

Looking ahead, the alumni intend to expand their engagement beyond medicine, organizing future events to highlight careers in engineering, law, entrepreneurship, and other fields. “Our goal is to ensure that every student receives the guidance and support needed to excel in their chosen paths,” affirmed Engineer Chepkwony.

As Tenwek High School continues to uphold its legacy of academic excellence and holistic student development, initiatives like the alumni-led medical team are set to play a pivotal role in shaping the aspirations and achievements of future generations.
