Tragic Incident Claims Life of Ugandan Athlete Rebecca Cheptegei
Ugandan athlete Rebecca Cheptegei has tragically passed away at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret. Cheptegei, who was admitted to the ICU with severe burns, succumbed to her injuries after her condition deteriorated and her organs failed.
Dr. Owen, the acting director of MTRH, reported that Cheptegei’s burns covered over 80% of her body, leaving her with minimal chances of recovery. Despite intensive medical care, she died last night.
Cheptegei sustained these injuries in a shocking incident involving her alleged boyfriend, Dickson Ndiema. Ndiema reportedly doused Cheptegei with petrol and set her on fire while she was at home. Ndiema also suffered burn injuries in the attack and was admitted to the same ICU as Cheptegei.
According to sources, Ndiema entered Cheptegei’s home on Sunday with a five-litre container of petrol. Cheptegei had gone to church with their children when Ndiema poured the petrol on her and ignited it. Neighbours, alerted by the commotion, intervened and rushed both victims to the hospital in critical condition.
The case has shocked the community, highlighting the severe consequences of domestic violence. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding this tragic event is ongoing.
