Uasin Gishu County Advances Housing and Infrastructure Projects: Cabinet Secretary Wahome and Governor Bii Lead Tour
In a significant step toward enhancing living conditions in informal settlements, Uasin Gishu County Governor H.E. Jonathan Bii Chelilim hosted Cabinet Secretary for Lands, Housing, Public Works, and Urban Development, Hon. Alice Wahome, for a tour of ongoing projects under the Kenya Informal Settlement Improvement Programme (KISIP) on Tuesday.
The visit highlighted various initiatives aimed at transforming the local infrastructure landscape. During her address to residents in Langas ward, Hon. Wahome praised Governor Bii’s proactive leadership, describing the ongoing projects as “transformative.” She particularly emphasized the construction of a new 2km tarmac road, which includes stormwater drainage and lighting, asserting that these improvements will significantly elevate living standards in the area.
Moreover, Hon. Wahome committed to resolving longstanding titling issues affecting local residents, a critical concern for many living in informal settlements.
Governor Bii expressed his satisfaction with the progress made in affordable housing projects, which align with the President’s vision for accessible housing. The tour included key development sites in Pioneer, Kidiwa, and Railway City, showcasing substantial advancements, including the construction of 2,260 low-cost housing units in Pioneer and an additional 220 units in Kapsuswa, Soy Constituency. These projects are designed not only to improve housing availability but also to create job opportunities for the local youth, thereby fostering regional growth.
“The KISIP initiative has markedly improved road infrastructure, drainage systems, and green spaces,” Governor Bii noted. “This journey has benefited numerous settlements, enhancing both economic and social livelihoods.” He also announced plans to install seven high masts in critical areas to bolster security and support a 24-hour economy.
With a funding allocation of 1.4 billion shillings approved, Governor Bii remains optimistic about future developments, including efforts to upgrade six townships to municipalities, which could unlock additional urban funding for further initiatives.
Dr. Janeth Kosgei, County Executive Committee member for Lands, Physical Planning, Housing and Urban Development, reiterated the department’s commitment to KISIP and the Affordable Housing Programme. She emphasized the importance of stakeholder collaboration in uplifting residents and ensuring equitable access to resources.
The tour was attended by several county officials, including CECM Eng. Joseph Lagat (Roads), Eng. Lucy Ngendo (Sports), Chief Officer for Urban Development Julius Koech, and local MCAs Hon. Francis Muya (Langas ward) and Hon. David Letting (Kipkaren), all of whom support the ongoing initiatives aimed at improving community welfare and infrastructure in Uasin Gishu.
