Uasin Gishu County business persons at the Eldoret wholesale market have registered their displeasure following the heightened unrest between them and the County askaris.

This comes after yesterday’s security personnel was deployed to the market to stop the movable handcarts also known as the ‘bang bang’ from operating in the Eldoret Champions Retail Market in accordance with the notice that was released on the 14th of October 2022.

The notice from the County Government came from the meeting that was held on 13th October 2022 between the handcart operators and the county government where they came to a common ground that the handcart owners operate in their specific designated areas.

The traders are in fear of their stock going stale as the unrest persists.
“We have no peace in this market, we cannot conduct our businesses in peace. We have been forced to evacuate the market. Our stock will go bad, we will have huge losses that we are sure the county government will not compensate. The market has been closed till further notice, how then shall we meet our daily needs with the market’s closure?” said the angry traders.

The Deputy Governor, Eng. John Barorot, however said the security personnel deployed need not relent until the market’s sanity is attained and orderly trade operations upheld.

“It is the responsibility of the County Government to ensure and promote orderly crowd and conduct of trade through the establishment and the enforcement of trade regulations. We noticed with great concern the unrest, the insecurity, the looting, and the disturbance of normal business activities from 10 am on Thursday, occasioned by the refusal of the handcart operators to obey and conduct their businesses in their designated areas as was agreed in the last meeting with their officials. Groups operating in unauthorized areas are intimidating market and enforcement officials with crude weapons.” said Barorot.

The Deputy Governor further noted that the restriction on movable stalls and the handcarts operations will enable effective trading as stated in the trader’s policy and other past meetings thus the unfortunate incident of unrest should come to an end.

“The County Government of Uasin Gishu condemns with the strongest terms possible the unfortunate incident that led to the looting and violence majored on innocent traders by criminals. we call on the police officers to ensure persons who took up the unlevel act are apprehended and dealt with lawfully.” echoed Barorot.

The enforcement is to continue for the next seven days in preparation for Uasin Gishu County being conferred into a city.
