Uasin Gishu County Commissioner’s Office and NACADA Holds Drug and Alcohol Sensitization to Over 500 Youths
The office of the Uasin Gishu County Commissioner Stephen Kihara in partnership with the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) held a sensitization to over 500 youths against drug and alcohol abuse.
The youths came from the six sub-counties in the County.
Speaking to the press at Eldoret Deliverance Church, Uasin Gishu County Commissioner, Stephen Kihara, said the event aimed at finding solutions to the challenges the county government and religious institutions face while engaging the youth.
“The purpose of this meeting was to educate and change the understanding of the youth on the use of drugs and in return use them as ambassadors to reach the youths in the grassroots and sensitize them on the same as the Country heads to the August polls,” said the Uasin Gishu County Commissioner.
Kihara noted that it’s sad that the political class buy illicit brew and drugs from youths during this campaigning period to persuade them to vote them in office.
“We are aware of political leaders who intend or buying youths alcohol to get their support them and also use them to cause violence. This is uncalled for and ill-intended and any politician who will be found will face the full force of the law, we totally rebuke this act with the strongest terms possible,” he said.
Kihara applauded the youths for their continuous assurance to maintain peace before, during, and after the August polls.
.
“We commend the youth for promising non-violent elections come the 9th of August and we encourage them to stick to their promise of maintaining peace as the elections are just around the corner.” The Uasin Gishu County Commissioner said.
He assured the citizens that they, as security players, are preparing adequately to ensure that movement will be smooth during the entire voting period.
“We will not sleep until we put proper precautions ahead of the general elections. The movement of vehicles at the transit in the Northern corridor won’t be obstructed. We will also ensure free flow of entry and exit at the Eldoret National Airport,” he said.
The youth in attendance proposed the closure of bars on voting day to ensure they vote while sober.
“We are proposing that bars should be closed before the actual voting day for youths to vote,” Collins Kemboi said.
The National Authority for the Campaign against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA), is currently working with county governments of the 6 listed counties likely to face violence to target the youths in these counties.
