Uasin Gishu County Takes Bold Steps to Combat Gender-Based Violence with New Gender Policy
Uasin Gishu County is making significant strides in addressing gender-based violence (GBV) through the development of a new gender policy that emphasizes promotion, equity, and the eradication of violence. The drafting process, which is currently underway, has involved extensive public consultations across all 30 wards of the county, ensuring that the voices of local communities and stakeholders are heard and reflected in the policy.
The initiative began with a public sensitization campaign that started at Zion Mall Road and extended to the Uasin Gishu County offices. This campaign focused on raising awareness about the dangers of GBV and the critical need for collective action in its eradication.
The new gender policy, which is being crafted by the County’s Gender and Community Development Policy Committee, aims to empower women while advocating for their economic inclusion. It also stresses the importance of involving men in addressing gender issues within the community. The policy, once finalized, is expected to be operational by the end of 2024.
A key component of the policy’s success lies in its broad-based support. To ensure this, Uasin Gishu County has prioritized effective publicity efforts, working closely with organizations such as Reprodrive and the Kerio Rights Organization. These collaborations have been instrumental in amplifying the policy’s message and garnering widespread community support.
The county’s approach also highlights the importance of strengthening existing structures that tackle gender inequalities. Civil society organizations, state departments, and local leaders are actively engaged in the policy development process, ensuring a comprehensive and inclusive approach to the issue. Public participation sessions have been held across all wards to ensure that the policy addresses the real needs of the people it is meant to serve.
As Uasin Gishu County continues to work towards finalizing and operationalizing this groundbreaking policy, it stands as a beacon of hope in the fight against gender-based violence, aiming to create a more equitable and inclusive society for all.
