Uasin Gishu Religious Leaders Call for Peaceful Campaigns
Uasin Gish Senior Religious leaders have appealed to politicians to maintain peace, before, during, and after the 2022 general elections.
Led by the chairperson Interfaith Council Rev. Geoffrey Songok this will help lower political temperatures which are already up after the recently concluded nominations and entering the official campaign period.
“We appeal to our political leaders to choose paths that will ensure the unity of our country and the security in mind that peaceful coexistence of our people is paramount. We request that security agencies treat all incidences related to breach of the peace as a criminal act and bring all perpetrators to book,” Rev. Songok said.
They called on citizens not to praise the act of lawlessness, to be tolerant during this period of political campaigns, and should avoid conflicts.
“Our political and ideological differences should not bring divisions, conflicts, and violence but instead help us bring constructive debates that will help us know how we can elect proper leadership for our good governance,” he said.
They said peace is indeed paramount and it’s a holy spirit gift freely given and freely shared.
“We call upon IEBC to consider the use of voter education exercise in order to educate voters on their role during this election period and when voting,” he said.
They called on voters to shun away leaders who intend to bribe them for their favor, transport them, those who are hate speech, inciters, and many others like them.
“We are aware that the nomination of presidential running mate candidates is yet to be done by respective political parties. We appeal that we remain calm and wait for their outcome and you should receive them with peace and joy and never condemn them,” he urged.
They called on the government led by President Uhuru Kenyatta to consider these hard economic times by reducing the cost of living by reducing the prices of products sold across the shelves.
