Youths Advised to Form Groups
Youth in Uasin Gishu County have been asked to form groups to assist in frameworks for targeted empowerment plans.
The county under the leadership of Governor Jonathan Bii is betting on, among others, youth empowerment and talent development, as tools for societal economic growth. Groups in sports, business and agriculture will help roll out specific empowerment programs.
Speaking in Ziwa Ward during a youth empowerment event, Director of Youth Affairs, Peter Ruto, said the County Government is keen on youth empowerment and that groups can make proposals.
Mr Ruto said, while there are several programs aiming at empowering the youth, proposals will assist in tailoring, placing and aligning programs for specific groups. Some of the benefits of being in groups include Access to Government Procurement Opportunities and loans.
“The Department of Youth and Sports, for example, runs sports and youth programs. However, we are also a ladder for youth who want to get into business, to access business loans,” said Ruto.
The director enlisted sports and talent development programs through tournaments as well as youth empowerment through sponsorships to technical colleges, skills acquisition and introduction to digital jobs.
Lameck Tanui, an officer from the Governor’s office says: “Governor Bii is very particular and keen on youth empowerment. It is for this reason that he directs all departments to at least find a way to tailor programs to empower youth.”
Joan Chebon, a program officer at the County Alcoholic Drinks Control Board (ADCB) taught the youth the disadvantages of alcohol and drug abuse.
The youth were given foot and volley balls and nets for use in training and to hone their sports talents.
