NATIONAL POLICE SERVICE CELEBRATES CORPORAL SAMMY ONDIMU
There is a Chinese saying that goes “If you want happiness for an hour, take a nap. If you want happiness for a day, go fishing. If you want happiness for a year, inherit a fortune. If you want happiness for a lifetime, help somebody”.Nobel and Pulitzer Prize-winning author, humanitarian and social justice activist by the name Pearl S. Buck stated that, “The test of a civilization is in the way that it cares for its helpless members”.
Their comments resonate well with the words of Queen Elizabeth II who posited in her 2016 Christmas message that, “It is understandable that we sometimes think the world’s problems are so big that we can do little to help. On our own, we cannot end wars or wipe out injustice, but the cumulative impact of thousands of small acts of goodness can be bigger than we imagine”.
These inspirational and ingenious words align perfectly with the persona of Sammy Ondimu Ngare, an incredibly brilliant, down-to-earth, disciplined, and respectful Corporal of Police (CPL) whose penchant is to mentor, affirm and influence. He is a family man, a musician, an actor, and a philanthropist who is currently deployed at Nakuru North Sub-County, Nakuru County.
The devoted and meticulous security professional joined the National Police Service immediately after completing his secondary school education. He underwent grueling recruits training at the famous National Police College – Embakasi ‘A’ Campus, formerly known as APTC, and successfully graduated as a Police Constable.
His first posting was in Kapsowar in Elgeyo Marakwet County from where he began his illustrious policing career and later successfully served in Ongata Rongai, Kibish in Turkana County, and Maralal. He was later deployed to the elite Security of Government Buildings Police Unit (SGB) and the Critical Infrastructure Protection Unit (CIPU). His colleagues fondly reminisce his exceptional performance of duty.
As a result of his ingenuity and devotion to duty, the indefatigable Corporal Sammy Ondimu was promoted from a Constable to the current rank of Corporal and he continues to serve with utmost professionalism, honesty, and integrity.
The elite officer was born and bred in Boroko Village in Kisii County and is an alumnus of the esteemed Riamagige Primary School and Suneka High School. It is from these premier institutions that the virtues of devotion, empathy, openness, and altruism were instilled and nurtured in him.
Corporal Sammy Ondimu discovered his intrinsic musical rigor and prowess while still in primary school. He excruciatingly nurtured the talent and perfectly exhibited his skills in high school by recording exemplary performances at the national music festivals.
The prolific music composer recorded his first hit album dubbed ‘Askari ni Binadamu’ which instantly catapulted him to the National and International limelight. It was followed in rapid succession by another hit christened ‘Kilio Baragoi’ in memory of our fallen heroes in a past Baragoi banditry attack.
Other prominent singles from his album include ‘Habella’ and ‘Upendo wake Mungu’ among others. Corporal Sammy Ondimu is focused on sharpening his music skills and recording more music albums with powerful therapeutic effects on the human psyche and particularly songs that address work-related stress and mental health challenges among police officers which consequently enhances service delivery.
A philanthropist-par-excellence, Corporal Sammy Ondimu has played a critical role in improving the livelihoods of the less fortunate by mobilizing and coordinating friends, fellow officers, and various organizations to provide wheelchairs, construction of houses and basic needs to street children and reuniting them with their families or placing them in rescue and care centers.
He has also sponsored several children academically from primary level through high school to the university. In addition, Corporal Sammy Ondimu was desirous to achieve more social change and he established the ‘Askari ni Binadamu’ project which in collaboration with the Turkana County Government, has managed to rescue girls who were on the verge of undergoing Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and child marriages. These vulnerable girls are placed in various schools to continue with their education.
The versatile police officer magnificently plays the role of a brazen and a tough instructor in the fascinating Inspekta Mwala drama series aired by Citizen Television where he exhibits much range while remaining so irreducibly and inscrutably himself. As a result of his unwavering dedication and selfless service to the country, Corporal Sammy Ondimu has been recognized twice by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) and received the coveted Outstanding Police Service Award (OPSA).
