VIHIGA TO OFFER MORE CANCER SCREENING AND TREATMENT SERVICES
According to the National Cancer Control Program, atleast nine women in Kenya die everyday due to cervical cancer.
Last year, Kenya recorded 42,000 new cancer cases while 27,000 people succumbed to this number three killer disease.
Vihiga County Government will ensure that all the health facilities across the county are well equipped to provide screening and treatment services to residents.
This is according to Hon. Dr. Wilber Khasilwa Ottichilo who spoke today at a cancer training workshop held in Gisambai ward, Hamisi Sub County.
Dr. Ottichilo added that his administration is committed to improving healthcare services to Vihiga people and in order to achieve this, he will ensure that all facilities across the county are fully fledged so that mwananchi gets services closer home.
He also assured healthcare workers of more advanced training sessions to enhance capacity building and skills improvement, taking the opportunity to appreciate partners who have continously supported his government by training staff and donating equipment.
However, the County Boss called on residents to make sure that girls aged 10 years get the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccine to prevent cervical cancer.
Health Services Chief Officer Dr. Mary Anyienda challenged the healthcare workers to create awareness and also work with other stakeholders to expand their knowledge capacity and narrow information gaps within the community.
On her part, County Reproductive coordinator Veronica Musiega said the training which was facilitated by Clinton Health Access Initiative and National Cancer Control Program will increase the number of residents requiring screening since the healthcare workers are now enriched with skills and equipment to screen and treat patients.
