DEFENCE CS OPENS THE 12TH ANNUAL RETREAT ON PEACE, SECURITY AND STABILITY IN AFRICA

Defence Cabinet Secretary Hon. Eugene Wamalwa on Monday 1 November 2021 opened the 12th session of a High Level Retreat on the Promotion of Peace, Security and Stability in Africa on behalf of HE the President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces Hon Uhuru Kenyatta.

The retreat convened by African Union (AU) Commission under the theme of ‘Improved coordination and harmonization for impactful mediation’ aims at addressing African peace and security threats and their mitigation measures.

On behalf of President Uhuru Kenyatta, the CS reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment in preventive diplomacy, peacekeeping, conflict resolution and post-conflict reconstruction in the Horn of Africa, the Great Lakes regions, and across the length and breadth of Africa.

“Kenya believes firmly that terrorism can be defeated and will be defeated. We will continue to effectively contribute to continental efforts in the prevention and combating of international terrorism in all its aspects by deploying a mix of capabilities and frameworks informed by lessons learnt in combating terrorism,” the President’s speech read in parts.

The Presidents’ speech highlited that the Kenyan government is committed to collectively enhance its responses to terrorism by deploying a mix of capabilities and frameworks informed by lessons learnt in combating terrorism.

The meeting is being attended by the (AU) Commission Chairperson H.E Moussa Faki Mahamat, AU High Representative for the Horn of Africa Region H.E Olusegun Obasanjo, AU High Representative for Mali H.E Jonathan Goodluck, AU High Representative H.E Ernest Bai Koroma and Co-Chair Femwise Africa H.E Catherine Samba-Panza, among other senior African leaders.

The retreat ends on Wednesday 3 November 2021.
