Two Busia female athletes missed slots for the World Deaflympics Championships by a whisker during the National trials at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi.

The first two podium finishers booked tickets for the world bonanza, thus denying the two Busia runners an opportunity to represent the country in the prestigious global event.

Loreen Ngonga shrugged off stiff opposition to register impressive performance in the two-day National Athletics championships that ended in Kenya’s capital.

Ngonga took third position in two disciplines with Jentrix Sedi emerging third in one event and fourth in the other.

Ngonga finished third in 5000 metres in a time of 21 minutes 52.5 seconds with Sedi taking fourth position.

Serah Wangare from Nyandarua came in first with a season best of 18:55:04. Gracy Kendagor from Nakuru was second with a personal best time of 19:08:00.

In 10,000m walking race, Ngonga took third position, returning home in a time of one hour 10 minutes and 32 seconds. Ann Wang from Eldoret took first position in 1 :05.40 with Damary from Embu finishing second in a time of 1: 10.09.

Jentrix Sedi emulated Ngonga’s feat by finishing third in 1500m with a time of 5 minutes 55.9 seconds. Sharon Bitok from Eldoret returned home in first position with a time of 5:00.9. Rebecca Matika from Nairobi finished second in 5:24.9.

Chief Officer Culture, Sports and Social Services, Maurice Odundo who witnessed the athletes consolidate the county’s supremacy lauded the spirited fight of the athletes despite their disability status.

” On behalf of Busia Governor, H.E Sospeter Ojaamong, I thank the two runners for making Busia proud. The county government will continue sponsoring the team and others who represent the county in national championships,” he said.

He added: I can’t forget my boss CECM Dr Janet Manyasi and the staff for their unwacering support that made the occasion a reality, this is a great milestone,” he said.
