Ex-Street Children Community Based Organization Official Wants Governor Bii to Include All Stakeholders Before evicting Street Children From Eldoret Town
The Ex-Street Children Community Based Organization in Uasin Gishu County has called upon the county government to put the agenda of the bottom-up economic model into practice by empowering the low-income families financially as the number of street children increases rapidly.
Speaking to the press, the leaders of the organization led by Peter Njenga he urged the county government to include stakeholders in dealing with the welfare of the street children in order to achieve the desired standards while also citing the harsh economic conditions caused by covid-19 pandemic as the main cause of an increased number of street children.
“There has been an increase in the number of street children and street families because of the covid-19 pandemic that caused economic and socio-economic challenges.”Said Njenga.
The organization leaders also called on the county government to expand the rescue centers within the county and employ professionals to deal with the street children decisively to avoid violation of their rights stating that previously there have been a number of reported cases of violation of human rights across the county rescue centers.
He termed the rapid increase in the number of street children as a threat to the security of the county stating that precautionary measures should be taken to avoid possible insecurity problems.
“We support the government’s decision to re-locate the street children because the large number is a threat to the security. What we want is that the County Government should include all stakeholders before evicting them from the streets.” Njenga added.
About 40% of street children usually leave their homes due to a lack of food and family issues.
