Uasin Gishu county government has announced the closure of the market in Eldoret for seven days following the unrest witnessed in the town yesterday.

This comes a day after the unrest saw the looting of the Eldomatt supermarket cookery during the operation of county officers to get rid of the bang bang operators.
Speaking to the press after vising the market, the deputy governor, John Barorot, said the traders should go back to their designated areas of operation in order for the rightful traders to continue operating efficiently.

“The bang bang operators are trading unfairly, roaming around with their carts making the operations of traders who own stalls inefficient. Everyone who wants to trade should find a designated area of operation,” he said.

He condemned the looting and promised to bring to book all those who engaged in the looting spree of business premises, including the EldoMatt cookery.

“It is unfair to the business people whose businesses were invaded and property stolen by goons. We will enforce the law and ensure that the perpetrators of the crime are brought to justice,” said the deputy governor.

As the operation to bring sanity in the market continue, traders have been asked to find spaces in the other markets around town to continue operating.
