The Trade, Industry and Cooperatives Committee, under the leadership of Hon. James Gakuya (Embakasi North), conducted an inspection visit to the New Kenya Cooperatives Creameries (KCC) plants in Kitale and Eldoret.

Led by the CEO of New KCC, Mr. Nixon Sigei, the Members were given a comprehensive tour of the upgraded facilities, where they were apprised of the improvements in production and operations achieved since the implementation of modernization measures. A key focus during the visit was to ascertain the profitability of the modernization project and its effects on dairy farming in Kenya.

During discussions, Mr. Nixon Sigei emphasized the Industry’s dedication to ensuring lasting solutions to the dairy farming industry while strengthening the Country’s Economy. He revealed that New KCC, following the revamp, had developed a strategic plan for exporting dairy products to the international market. Furthermore, the CEO reassured the Legislators of KCC’s unwavering commitment to the well-being of local farmers and the nation’s economy. In this regard, KCC has invested in the processing of powder milk, providing a cushion during times of drought and combating the issue of over supply and wastage.

The Committee later held a meeting with local farmers in order to hear their views and discuss their concerns. The farmers lauded the positive impact that KCC has had on their livelihoods in recent years. They expressed their appreciation for the leadership demonstrated by KCC and urged the Members to continue implementing progressive policies to support the dairy farming industry.

The Members encouraged New KCC management to maintain their focus on improving the lives of local farmers. The engagement also explored potential industry partnerships and viable business policies to promote further business development in the sector.

The Committee advocated for greater support for local farmers, particularly in guiding them towards working within cooperatives, which can foster a sense of community and collaboration.
