Education Committee Briefed on Kenya’s Readiness For World School’s Cross Country Games

Members of the National Assembly Education Committee, led by Chairperson Hon. Julius Melly (Tinderet) earlier today held a consultative engagement with Laurent Petryanka, the President of the International School Sports Federation (ISF).

At the meeting, attended by Mr. Kipchumba Maiyo, President of the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA), and other federation officials from the region , the lawmakers were briefed on Kenya’s preparedness for the upcoming ISF World Schools Cross Country Games.

Hon. Julius Melly highlighted the vital role of sports in Kenya’s education reform, emphasizing its inclusion in the curriculum as a means of nurturing young talents.

“The Education Ministry receives the largest vote in our country’s budget. The budget is the highest in the region. As the Committee charged with overseeing the ministry, we will ensure that the allocated funds are utilized effectively and that co-curricular activities receive the necessary support,” he stated.

Laurent Petryanka, President of ISF, clarified the purpose of his visit, stating that he was in the country to evaluate the nation’s preparations for hosting the ISF World Schools Cross Country Championships.

The event, scheduled for May 2024, is set to bring together learners aged 12 to 18 from over 134 countries to participate in the Cross-Country championships hosted by Kenya.
