Investigation Launched Over Police Shooting in Kitale

An investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting of a prison officer by a colleague at an entertainment establishment in Kitale, Trans Nzoia County.

The incident occurred at a bar in Utawala, where the police officer reportedly opened fire, killing the prison officer and injuring himself.

According to Witnesses, they heard gunshots which were followed by a state of confusion.
Police faced difficulty locating the exact location of the incident within the establishment and later arrived on the scene, and secured the scene.
“They transported the injured officer for medical attention while the deceased body was taken to Kitale Level 4 Hospital morgue,” said one of the witnesses.

“The one killed we meet daily because of work and the other one I have known him today.” Colleague to the deceased said.
The incident raised unanswered questions, regarding the officers’ on-duty status and the decision to withhold details about the suspect’s identity.

In response to this tragedy, security officers have implemented a temporary ban on armed officers entering entertainment establishments.
Additionally, the police department is expected to conduct a comprehensive review of its policies and procedures.
