Kenya National Union of Teachers Calls for Audit of Teacher Promotions

Eldoret, Kenya – The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) is raising concerns about the recent teacher promotions conducted by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC). KNUT’s Chepkoilel Branch Executive Secretary, Sammy Bor, questioned the selection process, stating that “only 36,000 teachers were promoted despite over 100,000 applying.”

Bor expressed his appreciation for the government allocating funds for promotions but emphasized, “We are not happy with the criteria that was used in the promotion exercise.” He added, “This is why as a union, we have called for an audit and thank TSC for accepting to sit down with us so that we audit the list together to ensure promotions are given to deserving cases.”

He spoke during the Nobble Sacco Annual Delegates Meeting.

KNUT also addressed the issue of capitation in schools. Bor argued that “capitation should commensurate with the kind of population and the kind of work in schools.” He highlighted the financial strain on schools, stating, “Many schools have even been taken to court because of debts by suppliers.” Bor urged the government to “be very strict with capitation” and called for specific guidelines to be outlined within the Basic Education Bill.

Finally, KNUT advocated for a more transparent teacher recruitment process. Bor emphasized the need for an “open” system that prioritizes “deserving cases based on the number of years they have stayed out of college.”
