Motorists Raise Concerns About Placard Requirement

Motorists in Kitale, Trans Nzoia County, Kenya, have voiced concerns over a recent directive mandating them to display placards while driving. Some drivers report facing difficulties complying with the rule, and there have been arrests on allegations of incitement.

John Kaponde, chairman of a local worker’s union, expressed deep worry about alleged harassment by detectives in the county. He claims some members have been forced to flee their homes to avoid arrest.

One worker, speaking on condition of anonymity, recounted a specific incident: “Approximately thirty soldiers came to my residence at night, threatening my life and vandalizing my property.”

These reports point to a climate of tension and fear among both motorists and workers in Kitale. The motorists’ complaints come on the heels of Governor George Natembea’s apparent disapproval of the directive, as he called for urgent measures to address the situation.
