Bus Park Controversy Resolved, Governor Promises Fair Management

In a move to address longstanding tensions at the Kitale bus park, Governor George Natembeya on Monday announced a series of reforms aimed at fostering harmony and ensuring fair access for all stakeholders.

The announcement came during a meeting with county officials and representatives of matatu operators, bodaboda (motorcycle taxi) drivers, and vendors.

However, Governor Natembeya took a strong stance against politicization and criminal activity within the bus park.

“The bus park is not for politics,” Governor Natembeya declared. “It’s for doing business. Politicians should refrain from exploiting it for their agendas.” He vowed that the recent closure – implemented to address security concerns – would be the last of its kind. “Moving forward, we’ll only close for brief clean-up periods,” he assured.

The Governor further emphasized his commitment to fair allocation of resources.

“This market was built with public funds, and everyone deserves to benefit,” he stated.

He expressed shock at the discovery of a makeshift jail cell within the bus park, where people were allegedly tortured and fined.

Governor Natembeya outlined a series of directives aimed at improving operations and transparency.

He called for the mandatory employment of personnel by Saccos (Savings and Credit Cooperatives), including conductors who now hold director positions. Additionally, he instructed matatu owners to provide uniforms for easy identification.

“Those working at the stage will be trained about Saccos and encouraged to save,” Governor Natembeya said.

He also announced the allocation of stalls to Saccos lacking office space and a ban on government officials owning stalls within the market. Finally, he urged everyone to refrain from alcohol abuse within the bus park.

On his past, CEC Trade Patrick Gacheru highlighted the problems inherited from the previous administration, where a select group with political ties held undue control over the market.

“This plan lacked proper structure and caused friction between operators and vendors,” Gicheru said.

He praised Governor Natembeya’s proposed structure, emphasizing its potential to “promote sustainable growth within the market.”

CEC Agriculture, Corporate and Fisheries Phanice Khatundi expressed satisfaction with the collaboration between the Ministry of Agriculture and transportation cooperatives.
