Law Society of Kenya Vows Legal Action Against Police Brutality Amid Protests
In response to recent violent incidents during anti-Finance Bill 2024 demonstrations, the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has taken a decisive stance against police brutality. LSK President Faith Odhimabo has announced that the organization will pursue legal proceedings against police officers found guilty of attacking peaceful protesters.
President Odhimabo emphasized that the right to protest peacefully is constitutionally guaranteed and condemned any unwarranted aggression towards Kenyan citizens exercising this right. She warned that officers of the National Police Service engaging in violence or arbitrary actions will face severe legal consequences.
“We reiterate our stern warning to officers across the country that acts of violence and arbitrariness will be met with strong opposition and personal legal consequences,” stated President Odhimabo.
The LSK is currently investigating reports of violence against demonstrators during protests against proposed tax increases. President Odhimabo affirmed that comprehensive records are being compiled of alleged police atrocities, and assured that necessary legal actions will be initiated against officers found responsible for unlawful conduct.
“We are taking a detailed record of all atrocities being perpetrated by officers contrary to their duty to protect all citizens and will commence necessary legal action against all officers identified acting unlawfully,” she affirmed.
The LSK’s firm stance comes in the wake of tragic events during recent protests, including the fatal shooting of Rex Masai, an unarmed protester. President Odhimabo has called for justice, demanding swift action to apprehend the officer responsible for Masai’s death.
Echoing public outrage, President Odhimabo urged Police Inspector General Japheth Koome to expedite the investigation and ensure accountability for those involved in acts of violence.
