In a significant development hailed by human rights bodies, His Excellency the President has withdrawn the contentious Finance Bill 2024, a move seen as a demonstration of leadership and commitment to constitutionalism and the rule of law.

Speaking on behalf of human rights activists, Kipkorir Ngetich of Eldoret praised the President for his wise consideration in pulling back the bill, emphasizing that it reflects statesmanship and a proactive approach towards national unity. Ngetich urged all sectors of Kenyan society, including political leaders, church leaders, professionals, and citizens of goodwill, to rally behind the President and his administration as the country charts a path towards broader consultation.

“In this critical juncture, we call for restraint and the suspension of all protests as a gesture of goodwill,” stated Ngetich, highlighting the need for calm and normalcy to prevail following recent unrest. He expressed deep regret over the loss of young lives and the destruction of property during the protests, underscoring the importance of unity and forgiveness to safeguard Kenya’s international reputation and restore peace.

Ngetich also addressed the underlying challenges facing Kenya’s youth, including poverty, unemployment, drug abuse, and social exclusion, stressing the urgency of collective action to find sustainable solutions. He called upon members of the National Assembly and County Assemblies to be more attuned to the evolving needs of society and prioritize legislation that addresses these pressing issues.

“Our motherland’s peace and international standing must be vigilantly preserved,” emphasized Ngetich, echoing the sentiments of human rights activists who stand firmly behind the President’s recent address to the nation. The message, characterized by wisdom and statesmanship, has resonated deeply with advocates for human rights and social justice across the country.

As Kenya navigates through these challenging times, the call for unity and dialogue has never been more imperative. Human rights activists remain committed to supporting initiatives that promote inclusivity, fairness, and the well-being of all Kenyans.
