In a significant development for junior secondary school education in Kenya, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced plans to rehire over 700 intern teachers whose contracts were previously terminated by the government. The decision, aimed at addressing recent educational disruptions, was disclosed by TSC Chief Executive Officer Nancy Macharia on June 27, 2024.

Following weeks of uncertainty after their dismissal, the affected teachers can now look forward to reinstatement pending certain procedures outlined by the TSC. Macharia emphasized that the interns must formally appeal to the commission to be considered, adhering to legal requirements governing their re-employment.

“The interns must first appeal to the commission to be heard as required by the law,” Macharia stated, underlining the procedural steps necessary for the teachers’ reinstatement.

Furthermore, Macharia expressed optimism regarding the reinstatement process and assured that plans are underway to offer permanent and pensionable positions to the rehired teachers within public schools.

“We are confident that adequate funds will be availed for the exercise, and 1 billion shillings has been set aside to promote more teachers,” Macharia affirmed, highlighting the government’s commitment to bolstering the education sector.

The move comes amidst efforts to stabilize the education system following disruptions caused by the termination of contracts and subsequent strikes by affected teachers. The rehiring initiative is expected to alleviate staffing gaps in junior secondary schools across the country, ensuring continuity and quality in education delivery.
