In a troubling series of events, residents of Uasin Gishu County have fallen victim to a scam orchestrated by individuals posing as content creators. This scam involves unsuspecting citizens being duped into purchasing meals for these fraudsters under the guise of participating in a video challenge, only to be swindled out of their money.

Joyce Cherop, a student, recounted her experience where a man approached her, requesting lunch money. “I sent him 500 KSh, thinking it was for lunch, but he then claimed I had won 5000 KSh in a challenge,” Cherop lamented. Similarly, Agness Chelimo, a shop owner in Langas, was approached by a man introducing himself as “Kingbizzyboy,” asking for lunch money and promising her a 15,000 KSh reward shortly after.

“This scam has affected many people, especially women, who are targeted due to their perceived trustworthiness,” stated one concerned resident.

Despite numerous reports, the local government of Uasin Gishu has yet to take decisive action against these fraudulent activities. There is a growing call from the community for authorities to intervene and ensure that individuals engaging in such deceptive practices are held accountable. Citizens are urging for stricter regulations requiring content creators to provide proof of legitimacy and valid permits to operate within the county.

“These scammers are preying on the goodwill of our citizens. It’s time for the authorities to step up and protect us,” remarked a local resident who wished to remain anonymous.

Efforts to reach out to local officials for comment on the matter have so far been unsuccessful. Concerns are mounting that if left unchecked, such scams could continue to proliferate, potentially impacting even more vulnerable members of the community.

As investigations into these incidents continue, residents are advised to exercise caution and report any suspicious activities to the relevant authorities. The community remains hopeful that swift action will be taken to prevent further exploitation of innocent individuals in Uasin Gishu County.
