Former Nandi Hills Member of Parliament, Alfred Keter, has broken his silence on what he describes as an abduction by government authorities, aimed at intimidating and silencing dissenting voices. Keter, who was speaking after recording a statement at the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) headquarters in Kiambu, vehemently denied claims by President Uhuru Kenyatta that he had been arrested due to failure to honor police summons.

“When I was arrested, I was asked about my relationship with former President Uhuru Kenyatta and my relationship with DP William Ruto. The allegations about arms from Congo seem like a movie. They should not intimidate us into silence,” Keter asserted.

The former legislator expressed shock at the events of Sunday, stating there were no prior summons from the DCI before his alleged abduction.

“The president yesterday said that failure to honor summons leads to arrest, but I was not summoned; I was abducted. There were no summons,” Keter insisted.

Keter was accompanied by members of the Azimio la Umoja coalition, who criticized the government’s actions as attempts to intimidate and harass dissenting voices. Kalonzo Musyoka, the leader of the Wiper Democratic Movement, questioned the government’s commitment to democracy amidst growing concerns over authoritarian practices.

“Is this a democracy we are living in? It feels more like a dictatorship. We demand that young Kenyans demonstrating out there be allowed to exercise their constitutional rights,” asserted Musyoka.

The incident has sparked renewed debate over the state of civil liberties and political freedoms in Kenya, with opposition leaders accusing the government of stifling dissent and resorting to extrajudicial measures to silence critics.

Efforts to reach the DCI for comment on Keter’s allegations were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
