In a bold move reflecting growing discontent among Kenya’s youth, a group identified as Generation Z has taken a stand against the politicization of churches in the country. The recent target of their protest was a fundraising event at Lavington United Church in Nairobi, where Mrs. Ruto was scheduled to attend and raise funds for a sanctuary construction project.

The youths, disapproving of what they perceive as the exploitation of churches for political gain, mobilized to cancel the event. This action underscores their frustration with the diminishing focus on spiritual activities in favor of political agendas within church premises. According to reports, the youths expressed their dismay over churches being used as platforms for political rallies and donations, rather than solely for worship and spiritual growth.

Citam Presiding Bishop Calisto Odede commented on the situation, acknowledging the youths’ discontent and emphasizing the need for church leaders to heed their prophetic call. “The youth have shown that the clergy should not politicize Christianity and Christianize politics,” Bishop Odede stated, reflecting on the broader implications of the protest.

In a related incident highlighting the intensity of their stance, the youths commended All Saints Cathedral for providing a sanctuary during a recent confrontation where police reportedly deployed tear gas canisters within the cathedral’s compound. This incident further fueled their determination to reclaim the sanctity of places of worship from external influences.
