The Chairman of the Council of Imams and Preachers of Kenya (CIPK), Abubakar Bini, has called for urgent government reforms amidst recent demonstrations and financial concerns affecting the country. Speaking in Uasin Gishu today, Chairman Bini addressed various issues including government expenditure, corruption, and youth activism.

In his address, Chairman Abubakar Bini acknowledged the recent peaceful demonstrations against salary increments for MPs and Governors, which were subsequently frozen by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) due to public pressure. “We have witnessed successful demonstrations over the past three weeks, demonstrating the power of public opinion,” stated Chairman Bini.

He further urged President William Ruto to take decisive action against corruption within his administration. “The President should demonstrate his commitment to fighting corruption by removing all implicated individuals from his cabinet. This action is necessary to restore public trust and respect,” emphasized Chairman Bini. He also called for a reduction in the number of government officials to alleviate the high cost of living, suggesting that the current number of Members of Parliament, currently excessive at 210, should be reduced to a more manageable figure.

Addressing concerns about tribal tensions and political slogans, Chairman Bini cautioned against inflammatory rhetoric, particularly the “Ruto Must Go” slogan circulating among some segments of the youth. “We urge the younger generation, particularly the Gen Z, to refrain from slogans that could incite tribal conflicts and endanger lives. Let us wait for the electoral process to express our political preferences peacefully,” urged Chairman Bini.

Echoing similar sentiments, Kassim Swaleh, Uasin Gishu Youth Leader, emphasized the importance of peaceful protest and responsible civic engagement. “We have observed youth demonstrations concerning the finance bill and other issues affecting our country. While it’s crucial to voice our concerns, we must do so peacefully and responsibly. Burning our country is not the solution,” urged Swaleh.

Both leaders highlighted the need for streamlined government operations to reduce inefficiencies and unnecessary expenditures. They called on President Ruto to initiate reforms that would optimize government departments and reduce the financial burden on taxpayers.

The statements from Chairman Abubakar Bini and Youth Leader Kassim Swaleh underscore a growing consensus among Kenyan leaders and youth activists for accountable governance, fiscal responsibility, and peaceful civic engagement.
