Cotton Industry to Create 500 Jobs – Governor Busia

In his effort to transform the fortunes of Busia County governor Dr. Paul Nyongesa Otuoma continues to engage partners.

Dr. Otuoma held a discussion with Dr. Josephine Ojiambo and Mr. Rajeev Arora, Value Chain Expert on how to improve cotton production and creation of employment at primary and secondary levels for better livelihoods of Busia County residents.

“From the discussion, it emerged that, through the breeding of Eri Silkworm, there is the potential of creating between 500 and 1,000 jobs in year one and between 25,000 and 30,000 jobs in year four,” said the Busia governor.

Governor Otuoma also engaged the partners on how to add value to the locally produced cotton by developing it into yarn and then fabric before exporting as apparel to overseas markets like UK, USA, and Japan.

“The cotton industry in Busia has the potential of creating over 500 jobs and a sustainable income of over kshs. 10-12 million per year,” he added.
