IEBC clears Irungu Kang’ata to vie for Murang’a Governor seat
IEBC has cleared Irungu Kang’ata to vie for Murang’a Governor seat.
Kang’ata was cleared along with his running mate Winnie Mwangi, who was barred from vying on Monday, after IEBC determined that she had failed to resign within the legal deadlines.
Murang’a Senator Irungu Kang’ata has been cleared by the IEBC to run for the Murang’a Governor seat in the upcoming August General Election.
Kang’ata was cleared along with his running mate Winnie Mwangi, who had earlier been barred from vying after IEBC determined that she had failed to resign within the legal deadlines.
According to reports, Ms Mwangi did not resign by February 9 in violation of the Elections Act, which requires public officers seeking elective seats to resign six months before an election.
She was a lecturer at the University of Nairobi for more than 25 years before being chosen as Kang’ata’s running mate.
Kang’ata, who was swift to respond, attributed the mishap to malice, claiming that candidates in the race had banded together to undermine her bid.
Kang’ata said his camp has evidence that his deputy resigned on time, and that the matter would be solved in good time.
