Kenyans Urged to Go For Diabetes Screening

A section of Uasin Gishu County medical officers have partnered with the Catholic Diocese of Eldoret clergy to undertake free diabetes screening to mark World Diabetes Day (WDD).

Speaking to the press Turkana Catholic Diocese Archbishop Rev John Mbinda said the exercise is aimed at creating awareness and people to know their status.

“Screening is one of the most preferred ways to know one’s status. The lifestyle diseases have increased due to what people eat and how they stay in society,” he said.

“We are here to assist society to live healthy by screening them to know their diabetes status, they should not get worried since it just takes a few minutes and you are good to go, we are living in a world whereby lifestyle diseases have gone up drastically due the food we food we eat and lack of exercise”, said Mbinda.

The Medical officer in charge of Kidney and Chronic disease at Optri Center Jane Koech said that many people suffer from diabetes and from past studies show that lifestyle diseases are on the rise each year.

“Over 4 million people today live with diabetes and this is because of our lifestyle generally what we eat and this has caused this disease diabetes being one of them”, said Jane Koech.

Kenya joins the rest of the world to mark World Diabetes Day (WDD) which is marked every year on November 14.

World Diabetes Day was founded in the year 1922 and is marked on 14 November every year which was the birthday of sir Frederick Banting who co-discovered insulin along with Charles Best.
