Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital Celebrates Milestone in XDR-TB Treatment
In a remarkable display of medical breakthrough and collaborative effort, Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) celebrated the successful treatment of a patient diagnosed with Extensively Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis (XDR-TB). The patient, identified as SKK, had been undergoing treatment at the hospital since 2018.
SKK’s journey to recovery began with a community outreach program led by Neighbors In Action Kenya (NIAK) in Tiaty, Baringo County. Following preliminary investigations, it was discovered that SKK was afflicted with Tuberculosis, initiating prompt treatment. However, despite initial efforts, SKK did not respond to first-line medication, prompting further investigations.
Subsequent tests conducted at the National Government Laboratory in Nairobi and the Centre for Disease Control in Kisumu revealed that SKK had XDR-TB. Commencing in January 2022, SKK embarked on an intensive treatment regimen, which included over one thousand injections.
The successful diagnosis and treatment of SKK were lauded by Prof. Lameck Diero, the attending Consultant, who praised the multidisciplinary approach to patient care adopted by MTRH.
Dr. Philip Kirwa, the Hospital’s Acting CEO, expressed gratitude to the teams involved in SKK’s treatment journey since 2018. He commended the collaborative efforts of partners such as the National Government Laboratory, AMPATH, AMREF, Neighbors In Action, and the Global TB Fund for their significant contributions to SKK’s recovery.
Dr. Kirwa also acknowledged SKK’s resilience and positive mindset in adhering to the necessary treatment and care protocols. He emphasized MTRH’s commitment to excellence in research and medical care, positioning it as a leader not only within the country but also on the global stage.
The milestone celebration witnessed the presence of representatives from the National TB Program, the Chief Officer of Health from Uasin Gishu County, the County Director of Health, the County TB Coordinator, and the AMPATH Team, among others.
SKK’s successful treatment serves as a beacon of hope and underscores the importance of collaborative efforts in combating challenging medical conditions such as XDR-TB. MTRH’s dedication to patient care and medical innovation continues to set a precedent for healthcare institutions nationwide.
