National Cohesion and Integration Commission(NCIC) has Partners with European Center for Electoral Support to Train Peace Actors
National Cohesion and Integration Commission(NCIC) has partnered with European Center for Electoral Support to train peace actors in Uasin Gishu County.
Speaking to the press National Cohesion and Integration Commission Senior officer Isaack Munya the peace actors are being trained on leadership skills which are going to impact leadership skills.
“We have identified that we need leaders in peace who are going to carry out the role of NCIC at the grassroots levels in preaching peace that is why we are training them to be trainers. We have people from government, doctors, pastors which are undergoing the training,” Munya said.
He noted that they are impacting knowledge upon them by building capacity for them to ensure that they cascade peace and cohesion in the community.
“Once they are trained they will help in mitigating, preventing and mitigating and reducing electoral violence especially in the forthcoming general elections,” he added.
He further said that the commission is carrying out sensitization to media houses on how they are supposed to do their reporting because media plays a key role in relaying information.
“The media is vital in relaying information and if they relay wrong information that might lead to war. As a commission, we are monitoring social media and we have a team that works social media monitoring team which has all the equipment carry out the role,” he said.
“We have managed to arrest few people who have been spreading hate speech on social media and we urge Kenyans to ensure that they use social media responsibly and use it for good and not bad,” he added.
He said the Commission is working with DCI in monitoring political forums where they have gadgets which will be used in the electioneering to record incitive utterances.
“We urge Kenyans to be making recordings and sharing with us,if you see a forum spreading hate speech it’s your duty as a Kenyan to report them and share with NCIC for action,” Isaack Munya noted.
European Center for Electoral Support Deputy Project Coordinator
Wilson Manji said the partnership with NCIC is meant to deepen democratic governance in Kenya where it focuses in promoting cohesion and peace in the electoral process.
“This is the commitment by the European Union of ensuring that the coming elections are peaceful and promote an atmosphere of cohesion, inclusive and one that reveals outcome,” he said.
