National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) has urged residents of Turbo in Uasin Gishu County to manage the disposal of plastic waste.

Led by the County Director of Environment Solomon Keiyo called upon residents to avoid using plastic bottles and bags.

“I want to call upon residents to refrain from using bottles and plastic bags, this leads to an increase of waste in the town since plastic is always nonbiodegradable and can have effects on the environment,” said Keiyo
“Some of these flimsy papers end up clogging the drainage system therefore causing floods around the town while some from the market are even taken by our domesticated animals in the area killing them,” he added.

Executive Director Smatkkey Collins Kemboi applauded members of the public for gracing the occasion and asked them to keep planting trees.

“The tree planting exercise will help conserve the environment and also help to achieve the president’s vision of planting around 15 billion trees this year in the Go Green Foundation,” he said.

He noted that trees create beauty and bring fresh respiratory air into the environment.

“The trees will also be used for rain attraction into the year which will help in irrigation to boost production of food in the county during these economic crises,” he added.

Mary Kerich, the chief officer of Energy Environment Climate Change and Natural Resources urged residents to take their responsibility as a community to clean the environment and not rely on the government to provide workers to clean for them.

“We are not only doing clean up but we are also sensitizing the community about the importance of keeping our environment clean and also for people to know that their litter is their responsibility,” she said.
