Kenyan tea continues to shine globally, renowned for its rich, bold flavor and unwavering consistency. The sector is a major contributor to Kenya’s economy, generating nearly Ksh. 200 billion annually in foreign exchange earnings and accounting for 2% of the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The country produces over 600 million kilograms of tea each year, with plans to boost this production through strategic government interventions.
In the past two years, the government has distributed more than 180,000 metric tonnes of subsidized fertilizer to tea farmers, ensuring that they receive the necessary support to maintain the quality and quantity of their production. This year, an additional Ksh. 2 billion has been allocated to support the distribution of 97,000 metric tonnes of subsidized fertilizer.
Tea production not only bolsters Kenya’s economy but also plays a crucial role in environmental conservation, education, and rural development. With continued investments in the sector, including legal and institutional reforms, the government under President William Samoei Ruto is committed to safeguarding the interests of farmers and enhancing the overall performance of the tea industry.
As the world’s leading exporter of tea, Kenya’s continued success in global tea competitions serves as a testament to the resilience and dedication of its farmers and industry stakeholders. The recognition at the Tea Centenary Celebrations is a proud moment for the entire nation.
